Hotel Safety Tips

Travelling to see family is a great way to explore the world beyond our own backyards. Visiting family we are often offered the chance to spend the nights in their home as oppose to renting a condo or hotel. Unfortunately, it’s not always the best idea to stay with family. So let’s look at some hotel safety tips for your next journey.

Doing research on your destination before you leave will save you time and save you from potential problems. It is important to understand the neighbor hood that your hotel is located. A well lit area that is easy for anyone to access is ideal. You may want to check the local newspapers online for any gang related or other domestic issues in the area.

Once you’ve settled in your room, it can become quite easy to forget about the dangers that lurk outside it. Therefore you should always lock and dead bolt the door when you’re inside. This will prevent anyone from entering. In the mornings, the maid crews will usually knock on the door before going inside. However, we have come accustomed to always hang the sleeping sign outside the door while we are inside the room. If you happened to be in the washroom or busy doing something, you may not have heard them knocking and they may enter thinking that you aren’t around. What an unpleasant surprise that would be.

Another great tip is to make sure the door closes and locks behind you. Most hotel doors automatically pull closed but not always completely. You should always wait for it and double check by trying to open the room door. There are a lot of people who sneak in to hotels and test all of the doors to see if they can gain entry. This brings us to another point. Do not leave anything of value in your room unattended. You shouldn’t have to worry about hotel cleaning staff, but unfortunately, they aren’t all honest people.

Another, seemingly obvious, hotel safety tip is to not open the door for strangers or unexpected guests. Of course this is not just for your room, but for hotel itself. Many hotels have security doors for a reason, so respect them. Year after year there are thousands of cases of people, particularly women, who open doors for strangers and end up victims of horrific crimes. You can never be too safe.

Check with your hotel if they have 24 hour front desk service. You never know when an emergency will arise and they will be able to help you the fastest when you need it. Not only that, but we always like to chat with them late at night to find out where the best places in town are to shop and eat.

At night time, always try to stay in well lit areas. If you have a vehicle, park under the light posts. This not only will keep you visible but will also give you a sense of where you parked. For people travelling alone, it is always wise to check with the hotel if they offer escort services for people to their vehicles.

We’ve pointed out some hotel safety tips that you may think are obvious. But it becomes easy to forget the obvious when we place the trust and comfort in to hotels. Being more aware of your environment is the first major step in keeping yourself safe.
